Идиома “black sheep” появилась в результате редкой генетической комбинации: в стадах овец с белой шерстью иногда на свет появлялись ягнята с черной шерстью, в генетическом коде которых проявлялся рецессивный ген. Черная шерсть была практически непригодна для продажи, т.к. не поддавалась окраске, поэтому черных ягнят содержать было невыгодно. В Англии 18 в. черный окрас овцы и вовсе воспринимался как дьявольская метка. Возможно, именно поэтому это выражение изначально носило более негативную окраску, чем его русский аналог «белая ворона». Самым популярным вариантом этой идиомы был “a black sheep of the family”, в котором подчеркивалось значение, что «черная овца» – это человек, потерянный для семьи и для общества, своим антиконформизмом отбрасывающий тень на репутацию семьи; человек, который часто сознательно идет наперекор нормам и ожиданиям, вызывая стыд или смущение окружающих.

Интересно, что эта идиома произошла из-за ошибки переводчика одной из англоязычных версий Священного Писания. В так называемой Coverdale Bible – первом переводе Библии, выполненном Майлсом Ковердейлом, в первой книге Ветхого Завета существует следующая строка:

‘All blacke shepe amonge the lambes’

Подобно современным копирайтерам и инфоблогерам, авторы первых версий Библии копировали переводы друг друга с небольшими изменениями. Изначально в Книге Бытия пастух Иаков просит у своего хозяина всех овец черной масти, чтобы подчеркнуть, что он не украл ни единой белой овцы, что в конечном итоге приносит ему богатство, т.к. ягнята с черным окрасом рождались в стаде даже у белых овец. Таким образом, изначально черные овцы были символом честности, но со временем этот смысл исказился, и читатели более поздних версий Библий были уверены, что черных овец изгоняли из стада из-за их ничтожности и бесполезности. Этому немало поспособствовали американские пуритане, которые уже в 17 в., ссылаясь на Библию, называли “black sheep” пьяниц, сквернословов, распутников и лжецов.

В это время в Британии, напротив, считалось, что овцы черной масти принесут пастуху удачу. “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep” – одна из старейших английских детских рифмовок (nursery rhymes) и уж точно не несет в себе никаких отсылок на сатанинское происхождение несчастной черной овечки:
